The Residents is a water-based video projection artwork located at four eastern points of the Sutherland Pier, the Broadwater. It presented a strong opportunity to integrate public art in concert with landscape and urban design. The Broadwater has become a canvas for Walsh's projections, and offers its audience multiple visual experiences. Due to the effects of turbidity, tide, ambient lighting and wind, and based on where the work is viewed, what time of night, or even what time of year it is visited, audiences experience The Residents differently each time it is viewed.
